Die meisten Destillerie-Abfüllungen der noch recht jungen Port Charlotte-Marke sind „Private Cask Bottlings“. So auch die heutigen Abfüllungen im Tasting: 10y old Sherry Hogshead cask 282 – Ralf Lapan Edition, 6y old Bourbon Cask 961 – Longshaw Family Reserve und 8y old First Fill Sherry Hogshead cask 1149 – R&T (Regina & Thomas). Als Ergänzung noch ein 9y old Refill Ex Bourbon Barrel cask 127.14 – Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Mal schauen, welchen Einfluss die verschiedenen Fässer auf das Port Charlotte-Destillat haben werden!
Port Charlotte, früher auch Lochindaal genannt, wurde 1829 von Colin Campbell in Port Charlotte auf Islay gegründet. Letzter Eigentümer war die Distillers’ Company (DCL), die im Jahre 1929 die Brennerei auch schloss. Von der Destillerie sind heute nur noch die Lagerhäuser übrig geblieben, die von Bruichladdich genutzt werden. Die restlichen Bauwerke sind anderweitig vergeben.
Seit der Wiedereröffnung von Bruichladdich im Jahr 2000 durch den unabhängigen Abfüller Murray McDavid und unter der Leitung von Jim McEwan hat die Brennerei damit begonnen, ihre Produktpalette zu erweitern. Neben neuen, nur leicht getorften Bruichladdich-Abfüllungen wurden auch die stark getorften Marken Octomore (2002) und Port Charlotte (2001) ins Leben gerufen. Seit 2007 gibt es Pläne, die Port Charlotte-Destillerie wieder neu auf dem Gelände der alten Lochindaal-Brennerei aufzubauen, um so den Whisky traditionell wieder zu seinem Ursprung zurückzuführen.
Tasting Notes
Port Charlotte 10y (2001-2011) – Private Sherry Hogshead cask 282 (Ralf Lapan Edition) – limited 422 – 46%
Farbe: Volles Gold
Nase: Torfrauch mit ausgeprägter Sherry-Süße, etwas Vanille; frische blumige, zart kräutrige Aromen.
Geschmack: Komplexer Körper mit süßem Torfrauch, etwas Muskat und Zartbitter-Schokolade.
Finish: Sehr lang für 46%! Gegen Ende kommt eine etwas bittere Sherry-Holznote dazu, die dann recht trocken ausklingt. 87 Punkte (Nase: 88 / Geschmack: 87 / Finish: 87)

these bottles are private cask and were never sold on the market.
Maybe i still have the opportunity to get one bottle from the Longshaw Family.
The other Cask is owned by a German.
